Unemployment in Galway down 37 per cent since 2010

There are 2,100 fewer people claiming unemployment assistance across Galway than there were twelve months ago, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.

At the end of August in County Galway, the CSO figures show a total of 16,049 on the Live Register.

That figure was down from 18,151 (down 11.6 per cent) for August of last year, while there was a decrease of 131 people on the previous month.

The latest statistics also show that unemployment levels are down around 37 per cent on August 2010, when they hit a high of 25,389.

In Galway city, unemployment figures were down almost twelve per cent from 9,398 to 8,295 (down 1103) year-on-year, and also down by 120 people on the previous month.

The highest percentage year-on-year drop in the county was recorded in Loughrea, which was down 289 (15%) from 1,919 to 1,630. There was an increase of four people on the month of July.
