Uncertainty about job cuts at city plant

STAFF at the Hewlett Packard plant in Ballybrit still have been given no indication as to whether they will be affected by the worldwide job cuts planned by the company.

Close on 500 workers are employed at the HP plant — formerly Digital — but it will be later this month before employees will hear if Galway avoids the effects of the 24,000 plus worldwide job losses planned by the company.

There had been some concerns expressed by employees over the fate of approximately 100 workers involved in the manufacture of CD software for other firms — however, the company have declined to make any comment on this.

In the middle of September, HP confirmed that on a global scale they would be shedding in the region of 24,600 jobs following the acquisition of the Electronic Data Systems Corporation. That €14 billion acquisition would involve the duplication of services especially in ….
