Uncertain times ahead for Connacht as European Cup games postponed
THE uncertainty has returned to the rugby season. Cancelled fixtures and tentative plans are all Connacht have right now. On Monday, the EPCR took the decision to postpone the final two rounds of pool matches in this season’s Champions Cup after the French government instructed Top14 clubs not to travel because of rising Covid19 case numbers.
That means that Connacht’s trip to Bristol this weekend is now off and their clash with Racing ’92 a week later is also off the table. As of this week, the exact format of both the European competitions and the PRO14 is unclear. All part of the uncertain times we live in, but it is probably worth taking stock of where things stand.
First of all, Connacht finally have a break after a run of 12 straight weeks of training and action. Three games were postponed during that run (one of which was rearranged and played in late November) but all that was at late notice, so this week will be the first in over three months where players and management will get some much needed down time.
Connacht’s next scheduled game is on February 5 when they take on the Dragons in Wales and then a week later when they face the Ospreys in the Sportsground. There’s a small chance that they might yet have a fixture on January 30, but time will tell. They’ll be then due to face the five other sides in their conference one more time before concluding their campaign.
