UK firm ‘interested’ in station revamp

Government TDs have been accused of “extraordinary silence” in relation to the proposed €1 billion redevelopment of Ceannt Station this week, as it emerged that a number of multi-national developers have expressed an interest in the plan.

Among those who have an expressed an early interest in the massive city centre project is the UK firm behind the ongoing €480 million redevelopment of Victoria Square in the heart of Belfast.

The rail and bus station development for Galway, as envisaged by CIE, will include retail developments and 800 apartments at the city centre site, with funding from private development firms.

This has caused uproar among Labour Party members in Galway, who have accused CIE — who own the 14 acre site — of selling off State assets in the interests of property developers.

This week, it emerged that Multi Development UK Ltd. had already expressed an interest in any ‘public private partnership’ for the site. The firm behind the 800,000 square foot development in Belfast, which is due to be completed in March of next year, has built up a portfolio of massive regeneration projects throughout Europe.
