Galway Bay fm newsroom – UHG is the most overcrowded hospital in the country today.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation says there are currently 44 patients on trolleys at the hospital.
These are patients who need to be admitted, but there are no beds available to them at this time.
Management at the hospital have advised people who are attending the Emergency Department at University Hospital Galway to expect delays.
“We apologise to patients and their families for these delays. The children’s emergency department is not affected by the congestion in the adult department.
“The Full Capacity Protocol has been implemented and all efforts continue to be made to identify patients who are appropriate for discharge.
“We would like to remind the public that we encourage them to attend the Emergency Department only in the case of real emergencies and they should contact their GP or GP Out-of-Hours service in the first instance,” a statement from the Saolta Hospital Group reads.
Nationally, over 400 people are waiting on hospital trolleys around the country this afternoon.
