Údarás na Gaeltachta says it’s liasing with representatives on Inis Meáin to try and put a temporary arrangement in place to provide water services.

Aer Arann stopped flying in and out of the island last Friday [25/6] as staff would not operate the island’s airstrip due to a pay dispute with the island Co-Op.

Trade Union SIPTU has withdrawn its staff from the airstrip and also from working at the island’s de-salination plant which provides drinking water for the island.

In a statement Údarás says the difficulties on the island have arisen because Comharchumann Inis Meáin Teo has been unable to elect a management board rendering the Co-Op inactive.

Údarás is now liasing with islanders to try and provide a temporary water supply until a long-term solution is found.

Galway County Council has been shipping in bulk water supplies to the island due to a water shortage because of the recent fine weather.
