Date Published: 14-Sep-2012
A 33 year Afghan man has been banned from driving for two years after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving in the Oranmore area last year.
Qasim Khan with an address at St. Bridget’s Court in the city appeared before Galway District Court.
Qasim Khan was charged with driving a vehicle in a manner including speed which was likely to be dangerous to the public at Glenascaul, Oranmore on 6th November last year, contrary to Section 53 of the Road Traffic Act.
The court heard evidence that the man came to garda attention as a speed check-point was being carried out in the area and was noted travelling at a speed of 187 kilometres per hour.
Representing himself at Galway District Court, he told Judge Mary Fahy that he was approaching Galway with a friend and was testing how fast the rented car could go.
He said he didn’t see Gardai or hear a siren and had slowed down and stopped after crossing a roundabout.
Judge Fahy disqualified the man from driving for two years and also imposed a 500 euro fine with three months to pay.
