Galway Bay fm newsroom – Almost two thirds of mental health positions in the HSE West region have not been filled.

Figures released to Galway East TD Colm Keaveney show that just 37 out of 97 new posts allocated have been taken up.

These jobs cover initiatives in areas such as the child adolescent mental health service, the eldery and clinical programmes.

The HSE West covers a vast region including counties Galway, Roscommon, Clare, Leitrim, Donegal, Mayo and North Tipperary.

A spokesperson for the HSE West says 32 mental healthcare positions have been filled in the Galway/Roscommon region.

Nationally over 70% of posts allocated in the mental health services remain unfilled, and 412 children are over a year on a waiting list for a first appointment.

Deputy Colm Keaveney says he hopes to raise these issues in the Dail and the Seanad.
