TWO PHASED APPROACH IN CONVERSION OF GALWAY SHOPPING CENTRE ROUNDABOUT
Date Published: 30-Aug-2012
Traffic disruption is expected to be kept to a minimum as preliminary works are due to start on the Galway Shopping Centre roundabout next month.
It marks phase one of the Bodkin roundabout changeover which is set to be replaced by a signalised junction as part of the NRA funded Bothar na dTreabh scheme.
So far roundabouts at Briarhill, Ballybane and the Tuam Road have all been removed to link up with a central traffic control room.
The first phase of this latest changeover will begin next month and will involve the construction of a new access road from the Headford Road.
It’ll also provide for the partial construction of a new access road from Sean Mulvoy road and the necessary car park alterations.
Work will then be suspended until mid January so as to avoid any disruption to the Christmas shopping and sale peak trade periods.
The second and major phase will involve the removal of the roundabout and is expected to take an estimated 12 weeks with a revised completion timeline of early Easter.
Head of Galway Transportation Unit Joe Tansey says the National Roads Authority has sanctioned the extension of the project and the related 2 million euro in funding has been transferred to 2013 accordingly.
