Two nominated for Galway senior football manager job
Just two men – Kevin Walsh and Pete Warren – have been nominated for the position of Galway senior football manager.
Former Galway All-Ireland winning midfielder, Kevin Walsh (Killanin), who managed Sligo for five years, remains favourite to replace Alan Mulholland. Pete Warren (Tuam Stars), who was Galway selector with John O’Mahony during the county’s last two All-Ireland titles, is the other nominee for the job.
Both men will be interviewed by the football managers’ selection committee, who will propose a candidate for ratification at a County Committee meeting before the end of September.
The selection committee who will conduct the interviews comprises three County Board officials, Noel Treacy (Chairperson), John Hynes (CEO) and Bernie O’Connor (treasurer), and three football committee officials, Tadhg Ó Conghaile (chairperson), Seamus O’Grady (secretary) and Milo Costello (treasurer).
Former Galway manager and player, Liam Sammon, is also on the committee.
The same process applies to fill the Galway minor football manager position for which there are 10 nominees to succeed John Donnellan.
Killererin’s Tommy Joyce, who was Galway minor manager two seasons ago, has been nominated as has Matt Duggan (Annaghdown), Kevin Johnson (Salthill/Knocknacarra), Stephen Joyce (Clonbur), Matt Lawless (Barna), Terence Morgan (Moycullen), Tom Newell (Kilconly), Michael Quinn (St Brendan’s) and Des Sheeran (Salthill/Knocknacarra).
The County Board can look elsewhere, outside of the club nominations, if it isn’t satisfied with the candidates nominated for both positions.
