Two new TDs likely for Galway East

A count in Galway East is due at around 3pm as the constituency is set to return two brand new TDs.

It is widely expected that Independent Sean Canney and Fianna Fail’s Anne Rabbitte will be elected sometime tonight or early tomorrow.

It is Canney’s second attempt to get elected as he unsuccessfully contested the 2011 election and received more than 5,500 first preferences.

On this occasion he increased his vote by around 3,000 and will have the distinction of topping the poll.

It is Anne Rabbitte’s first time to contest a general election and she will be very pleased with her performance.

However, it could spell bad news for Deputy Colm Keaveney of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael’s Deputy Paul Connaughton as they are in distinct danger of losing their seats
