Two new exhibitions at Galway Arts Centre
Two exhibitions will open in the Galway Arts Centre this Friday night.
Supernature will feature new work by Linda Shevlin while Megga Bubble Space Burbs will focus on new work by artist Vicky Smith.
Linda’s exhibition is the result of a six-month residency at the Organic Centre in Rossinver, Co Leitrim. There, she worked with the staff and students to research and recreate a series of experiments exploring the many, often astounding ways in which nature manifests itself and adapts to its environment.
Supernature is inspired by Lyall Watson’s 1973 bestselling book of the same name. Linda became interested in a number of botany-related experiments that were carried out over the latter half of the last century. Watson describes these experiments as being “an exploration of the space between those things that we understand as normal occurrences and those that are completely paranormal and defy explanation”. Her exhibition will explore this concept through the objects and representations of the experiment, as well as a 20-minute film installation charting a fictional society that works with nature rather than against it.
Vicky Smith’s Megga Bubble Space Burbs has resulted from her six-month residency at the Galway Arts Centre. This work centres on the production of art objects that are key components in the production of this physical bell jar art installation. The bell jar syndrome stems from Sylvia Plath’s novel The Bell Jar, which described depression as being trapped inside one of these containers. Vicky concentrated on developing interplay of mediums within these bell jars. They are built-in sculptures containing videos, images of the modern and post-modern woman, with emanating analogue sound waves and found objects.
The Galway Art Centre Gallery at 47 Dominick Street and is open from Monday to Saturday 10am to 5.30pm. Admission is free
