Two late goals prolong Mervue’s agony

MERVUE United’s brave efforts to end a disastrous run of seven consecutive defeats fell apart in the final ten minutes of a closely fought encounter with First Division high-flyers Waterford United at Terryland Park on Saturday.
The Galway side looked to be on course to register their first point in over two months against Stephen Henderson’s outfit until two late goals by David Grincell and Graham Cummins changed the outcome of the game.
A number of former first team stalwarts started the match on the bench as John Glynn tried to shake up the team that has suffered some heavy defeats in recent times. Club captain Eric Browne was again absent from the line up, while Rory Gaffney and Mike Tierney were also listed among the substitutes.
Mark Ludden returned to the side following an injury in a more advanced role on the left wing, and new signing Neil Keane was handed a debut in attack in place of Kevin Barrett.
Stephen Henderson was forced to make two changes to the side seeking their third win on the trot at Terryland.
