Two goals for Galway United striker in comfortable home victory

IT has been a long time since the Dyke Road faithful left a match on an optimistic note in a season where even in comfortable victories Galway United weren’t entirely convincing.
On Friday night despite still being in the unenvious position of being four points off the play offs, fans departed after watching a much more adventurous attacking display along with having the privilege of seeing another Horgan get his time to shine.
Christopher Horgan became the third brother from the Salthill family to start a senior game for United in an impressive showing at right back, but it was Conor Barry who stole the show with his two superb strikes in a valuable win, coupled with an early tap in from Eoin McCormack.
Unlike a week ago in Dublin, the Tribesmen came out with a lot more vigour to their game with three changes made by manager Alan Murphy, including starting himself in place of the injured Ryan Connolly giving the side a fresh look.
That intensity resulted in the home side taking the lead within 30 seconds as a Marc Ludden cross found Gary Shanahan, who duly headed it down into the path of McCormack to best Stephen McGuinness for a terrific start.
United were dictating the pace of the game and looked very comfortable passing the ball around the middle of the park, happy to sit back until something opened up allowing Horgan to time and again hit almost inch perfect crosses into the front three.
While the misery of struggling to make the play offs has kept fans awake at night, the one real ray of light shining all year has been Conor Barry, who once again didn’t disappoint in putting in another outstanding performance for his side.
On 20 minutes, the Portumna native set up Robbie Williams with a free from the edge of the box only for the Englishman to disappointingly fail to direct his close range header into the net.
With the home side in full control, Cabinteely were struggling to get a foothold in the game, their attack lacking any real movement or adventure resulting in their only real tactic being to pick out Keith Dalton in the corner and he struggled without any real support to impact the game.
