Third man confirmed dead after Galway tragedy
The third young man involved in last night’s tragedy at Menlo has died, Gardaí confirmed this evening.
Two other youths – named as 16-year-old John Keenan and 17-year-old Wojcieck Panek – were earlier pronounced dead; all three had been taken to UHG after their car entered the water at Menlo Pier on the outskirts of Galway city, during the early hours of this (Saturday) morning.
The third man was named as 19-year-old Christopher Stokes.
John Keenan was described as a promising young boxer with Olympic BC in the city. Christopher Stokes also boxed with the club. Wojcieck Panek is understood to be originally from Limerick but was based in Galway.
Gardaí and the emergency services had received reports of a car in the water at approximately 2:40am, and the three young men were removed from the water and taken to University Hospital Galway.
The scene at Menlo Pier was preserved for technical examination carried out by a team of Forensic Collision Investigators.
