Two motorists have been charged following the tragic death of two lifelong pals after a road traffic collision in Ballinasloe last March.

The two motorists presented themselves by arrangement at Ballinasloe Garda Station where they were charged with careless driving causing the deaths of both walkers.

Garda Inspector Declan Rock in Ballinasloe confirmed to the Connacht Tribune that the two arrests had been made and both females were released on their own bail to appear before the sitting of Ballinasloe District Court on Thursday, September 27.

Close friends Deirdre Kilmartin and Maureen Dooley were killed in a freak road traffic collision while they were out on their regular evening walk. The whole community was devastated by what happened.

Following their funerals, an intensive Garda investigation was launched and last month an extensive file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions who has now issued instructions to proceed with criminal charges.

On Friday evening last, a woman in her early twenties presented herself by arrangement to Ballinasloe Garda Station where she was charged with careless driving causing death.

Then on Monday evening a woman in her late thirties was also charged with careless driving causing death and both will appear at Ballinasloe District Court on September 27. They were released on their own bail.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has instructed that the matter be dealt with by indictment and the two women charged will be sent forward for trial to the Circuit Criminal Court.
