Twelve year old singer’s charity CD is tribute to her late aunt
A twelve-year-old Glenamaddy Comhaltas player who has just recorded her first album – in memory of her late aunt – is to donate all the proceeds from its sales to the local hospice when it goes on release on Monday, December 15.
Young Creggs singer Eve Smyth, who plays the fiddle with Glenamaddy Comhaltas, made the decision with her family to record the album – entitled ‘Shooting Star’ – and donate its proceeds to Roscommon/Mayo Hospice following the death of Eve’s aunt Maria Maloney (nee Harris) earlier this year.
Maria was a noted actress with Glenamaddy Players, appearing in such productions as ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ in which she embraced the role of Agnes. Her husband Mickie also worked as a stage hand with the drama group while Maria was also a hard-working committee member of Glenamaddy Theatre Festival.
Now, Maria’s niece Eve is spearheading a charity drive to raise much-needed funds for the local hospice which took such great care of Maria throughout her illness. Eve explains the background to her recording her very own album.
“I go to a stage school in Roscommon, called Evolution Stage School, and I have been doing this for two years,” says the Creggs National School sixth class pupil.
“On the last show I was discovered by the singing teacher Paul (Hennessy) and he decided he would get me into a recording studio. Then, I just wanted to do it for charity, the Roscommon/Mayo Hospice.”
With the support of her parents, Richard and Olivia, Eve travelled to Longford to record her album. “I was very nervous but when you got into it, it was fun and very exciting. It was very exciting to go and see the equipment and that sort of stuff,” says Eve.
She also sings four songs on the album, namely ‘Wings’ (Birdy); ‘A Thousand Years’ (Christina Perry); ‘Love Can Build A Bridge’ (The Judds); and ‘Shooting Star’ (Bob Dylan).
