Galway bay fm newsroom – South Galway turfcutters are to mark a stand-off which took place between Clonmoylan raised bog owners and the Gardai this time last year.

The dispute over bog machinery took place on the special area of conservation bogland outside Woodford this day (June 21) last year over alleged illegal turfcutting.

The clampdown was carried out on behalf of the National Parks and Wildlife Service due to an EU directive which bans cutting on 53 such raised boglands nationwide.

Thirteen of these sites are wholly or partly located in Galway.

The Barroughter and Clonmoylan Bogs Action Group is marking the stand-off with a commemoration dance in Killimor tomorrow night at 9.30 (June 22) at Treacy’s bar.
