Turfcutters to gather at Moycullen bog in protest over commercial ban
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Turfcutters are to gather at a blanket bog in Connemara this evening to highlight their opposition to a controversial ban on commercial turf cutting at a bogland in Knockarasar.
The blanket bog is located off the Spiddal to Moycullen Road.
The NPWS has confirmed in a statement to Galway Bay fm news, that turf-cutting can be undertaken on existing banks in the Natural Heritage Area by individuals for domestic fuel needs.
However, the use of the sausage machine and commercial extraction are not allowed.
Connemara Area Cllr Tomás O’ Curraoin says a contractor will cut 20 hoppers of turf this evening for the owner of the bogland in question.
He says the matter has created significant concern in the area for households who depend on the bogland for their fuel needs.
