Turf war in Cappagh Road

PROFESSIONAL groundskeepers who had been contracted to treat the playing pitches at Cappagh Park were refused entry because of local authority ‘bureaucracy’, a city councillor has claimed.

A Limerick-based company had been asked to carry out more than €3,000 worth of spiking and sanding work on the pitches by Salthill/Knocknacarra GAA Club and Knocknacarra FC, with the cost being covered by the clubs.

However, they were refused entry to the grounds by a member of staff in the City Council who said they had no right to be there.

Cllr John Mulholland branded the incident as “ridiculous”. “They wanted to make the pitches playable for the Summer. They [the contractors] applied to City Hall for access. The whole thing seems ridiculous to me,” said Cllr Mulholland.
