People in Connemara may be prevented from cutting turf from now on, if their boglands are in a Special Area of Conservation.

Most of Connemara’s mountains are designated in this category.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service says that a ten year period of grace given for turf cutting in these areas is now over and that the cutting has to stop.

But Minister Éamon Ó Cuív says that the Parks and Wildlife Service is going too far with its directive.
