Turf cutting continues on raised bog in Monivea despite Garda presence

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Turf cutting is continuing illegally this lunchtime at a protected bog in Monivea despite a strong Garda presence

Approximately 100 turf cutters moved onto the bog with their machines at dawn and Gardai began to arrive in numbers shortly afterwards

In Co Roscommon over 30 turf cutters have gathered on a bog at Kilteevan near Roscommon town

A Garda spokesperson confirmed to Galway Bay fm news that Gardai are at the scene in Monivea

However he refused to say how many Gardai were there and at what time they arrived

He did say there have been no incidents or arrests at Monivea bog

Dermot Moran of the Barroughter, Kilmoylan, Ardraigue Bog Action Group is supporting the turf cutters in Monivea
