Portumna and Woodford turf cutters are to gather in the city this morning [Sunday Oct 9] to protest against the ban on cutting turf in raised bogs.

It’s the second in a series of protests by the group and takes place outside the Hotel Meyrick in Eyre Square where Michael D Higgins is scheduled to hold a benefit brunch.

The Barroughter and Clonmoylan Bogs Action Group claim that the Labour Presidential presidential candidate is reponsible for introducing a directive in 1997 which has resulted in the current ban.

The demonstration gets underway at a quarter to midday.
