Tuam woman’s festive light show helps Croí in memory of her late brother
Christmas might be a distant memory – but one charity is now reaping the benefits of one Tuam woman’s show of light that drew the crowds to her garden over the festive period.
May Gibsey’s front garden at her home on the Galway Road in Tuam has become a focal point for local children and, indeed, for curious passers-by.
And over the past few years, May has raised €15,000 for charitable causes – with the majority going to Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiology Foundation in memory of her late brother Joe.
The 49-year-old father of five from Headford suffered a massive heart attack and her garden is lit up in his memory.
“We extend it every year in memory of Joe,” May told The Connacht Tribune and explained that she gets a lot of help from neighbours and friends.
Donations this Christmas means the charity last week received almost €3,000 – and May is already making plans to extend her display of lights next Christmas.
“A person from Donegal was passing by and noticed the lights and called in to say hello. They were impressed with the manner in which the lights were erected and that is always good to hear.
“I’ve even had a few visitors from Roscommon who bring their children along to see the lights which is great. I’m just glad that they are attracting attention and all the proceeds going to a good cause,” she said.
It takes May – with the help of family and neighbours – around two days to erect the lights in her front garden…but only a couple of hours to take them down again once the Christmas season is over and done with.
“Christmas just wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t have the lights,” she said.
“If they bring joy to just one person, then it has all been worthwhile,” May added.
And she’s delighted too that she is helping Croí in the process.
“It’s a good cause and one that is close to my heart given the fact that my brother died from a heart attack. I think of him all the time and if people get enjoyment out of my garden, then that is a bonus,” May added.
