TUAM TREE THIEF FOUND GUILTY

A man has been found guilty of stealing trees from land owned by Libertas founder Declan Ganley.
John Keane of New Houses, Faugheen, Carrick on Suir, Co Tipperary has also been found guilty of stealing trees from another man in the same area.
The 33-year-old had denied both charges at Galway Circuit Criminal Court.
It took the jury of seven women and five men just forty five minutes to find John Keane guilty on both charges of theft.
He has been found guilty of stealing 8 ash tree stumps from Declan Ganley’s woodland at Moyne Park, Tuam on June 12th 2009.
He has also been found guilty of cutting down 14 ash trees and taking away stumps belonging to Thomas McHugh two days earlier.
During the trial, the court heard that Keane took the stumps back to Tipperary where he sold them to a local hurley maker for 800-euro.
He claimed he’d been given permission by Mr Ganley’s groundskeeper Ciaran Quinn to take them and that he mistakenly wandered onto Mr McHugh’s land.
Mr Quinn strongly denied this from the witness stand yesterday.
Both Mr Ganley and Mr McHugh were in court for the duration of the two-day trial.
After the guilty verdicts were delivered, Mr Ganley thanked the investigating Gardai before making a quick exit from the courtroom.
Keane has been remanded on continuing bail and will be sentenced at Galway Circuit Criminal Court on May 25th.

Galway has country’s largest population of young people

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.
According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.
The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.
However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

Call for direct donations to city charity shops

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.
It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.
However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

Galway ‘Park and Ride’ could become permanent

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.
That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.
The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.
Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.
Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
