The contracts have been signed for bringing natural gas to Tuam.

Bord Gais officials told a meeting of the town council last night (13/5) that they are hopeful of starting work on the project by the end of the month.

Peadar Mahoney, consulting engineer with Bord Gais Networks told the meeting that the target is to have the construction phase, costing 3.3 million euro, complete by early August.

The meeting was told that the cost of taking a connection to the front gate, or within 15 metres of a house is 220 euro plus VAT and 629 euro plus VAT for commercial premises.

Fiachra Quigley of Bord Gais Networks told the councillors that if 20 per cent of housing estates close to the gas mains signed up the estate could be connected.

At present six commercial users in Tuam have signed up to use natural gas.

The connection for Tuam is being brought from the pumping station in Beaghmore which also serves Headford and it is expected that work will be completed in approximately 12 weeks.
