The newly crowned English heavyweight boxing champion – victor in the most controversial of circumstances last weekend – is to receive an invitation to his father’s home town of Tuam with the possibility of according him a civic reception.
Members of the local Travelling community were transfixed to their TV screens as their hero Tyson Fury was given a controversial points decision over his opponent.
And former Mayor of Tuam, Cllr. Martin Ward along with family members is travelling to Manchester to meet with the big hitting 21 year old, whose father came from Tuam.
The boxing champ will be invited to visit Tuam to meet extended members of his family and be the guest at a civic reception.
“It is a proud day for the Travelling community and it is great that there is something positive to celebrate. Hopefully the invitation will be accepted.
“There are cousins of mine in Manchester who know his family well and it is through this that I hope to get to meet him and invite him back to where his family originated”, Cllr. Ward said.
Fury won a gruelling ten rounder against “Big Bad” John McDermott at the weekend and now plans to fight for the vacant Irish heavyweight title.
His opponent was shocked by the judges’ decision as he thought he was at least four rounds ahead going into the last but it was Fury who was awarded the title and agreed to give his opponent a rematch.
