Date Published: 23-Aug-2007
Labour leader Pat Rabbitte is resigning and Tuam County Councillor Colm Keaveney has welcomed the shock news
Senior party sources have confirmed that Mr Rabbitte who’s lead Labour since 2002 will announce he’s stepping down at a press conference in Dublin at 3.30pm.
The Mayo native and UCG Graduate, first elected to the Dail in 1989 for the Workers Party, signalled a major internal inquiry into where the party after what he admitted was a poor general election performance which saw the party return to the Dáil with 20 seats, one fewer than in the previous election.
Independent County councillor Colm Keaveney ran for Labour in the General Election and resigned last month in protest over Pat Rabbitte’s leadership.
While he refused to be drawn on whether or not he may re-join the Labour party, Cllr Keaveney gave this reaction to the news within the past half hour
