Tuam Gardai to compile register of elderly residents

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Tuam Gardaí are putting together a register of elderly and vulnerable people whom they intend visiting throughout the winter months.

The initiative was discussed at a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee this week where Inspector Michael O’Dwyer said the scheme was intended to reassure people who may feel isolated in the community.

Town council members said they would give the Gardai any assistance possible in compiling the register.

People who are aware of older people living in their area are being encouraged to get them to register their details with the Gardai and members of the force will visit them from time to time.

The scheme is being developed as part of the wider Neighbourhood Watch and Community Alert schemes which are operating in the Tuam Garda district.

It is also planned to hold a public meeting to inform people of what supports are available to people in the town with a further meeting planned at a later date for the rural Community Alert group.
