Galway Bay fm newsroom – Free parking for two hours each weekday in Galway in the lead up to Christmas is killing business in smaller towns according to members of Tuam Town Council.

They are demanding similar free parking facilities to stimulate business.

Cllr Mary Loftus said she had made similar proposals for free parking in Tuam on numerous occasions in the past and Cllr Larry Bane said the number of shoppers were very scarce in the town on Saturdays and some traders were worried about the survival of their businesses.

Cllr Sally Ann Flanagan said even two hours of free parking, as in Galway city during week mornings, would mean a lot for businesses in Tuam.

Director of Services Frank Gilmore said the council had given free parking concessions to Tuam prior to Christmas in previous years and the local authority would be even more generous with such concessions in the shopping period leading up to this Christmas.
