Tuam Cllr defends changes to county walking strategy
A Tuam councillor has defended the local authority’s decision to remove references to the Tuam to Athenry greenway in its county walking and cycling strategy.
The draft was presented and passed with the support of 22 members at the last meeting of the county council where a number of changes were detailed for the draft.
Cllr Michael Connolly says greenway activists in Sligo and Roscommon have made representations to councillors by email questioning their policy.
He says the section was removed from the strategy due to concerns that it would interfere with the chance of reopening the Western Rail Corridor in future.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Cllr Connolly says while the council is in favour of greenways where suitable, a democratic process was followed for the county walking and cycling strategy.
