Tuam boxing fans head off on Tyson’s trail

Members of the Travelling community in Tuam are booking their flights to watch their hero Tyson Fury box for a world heavyweight title bout next month.

Tyson’s father is Gypsy Joe Furey who was born and reared in Tuam before the family moved to Manchester. He has still plenty of relations in and around the North Galway town.

But at the moment fans of Tyson Fury from Tuam are booking their tickets to Dusseldorf in Germany to watch the fight on November 28.

It is no ordinary bout. Because Tuam’s Tyson Fury will be challenging for the WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles having not been defeated in his professional boxing career so far.

Tyson, who paid a visit to Galway city last year to meet fans, has become something of a cult hero in Tuam where his father grew up. He is 6ft 9ins in height and is undefeated in his professional career.

He has fought 24 professional bouts as a heavyweight and won all of them and 18 of these were by way of a knockout. He has now earned ‘his stripes’ to challenge for a world crown.

The bout was supposed to be held last Saturday week but the champion Wladimir Klitschko pulled out due to a calf injury.
