The Chairperson of the Tuam Bio-gas group says it will take the battle against the construction of an anaerobic digestion plant to the higher planning authority.

Galway County Council has granted planning permission for a biogas and anaerobic digestion facility in the Airglooney business park.

15 conditions have been attached to the development going ahead.

These refer to health and safety, public health and traffic management.

The facility will be used for anaerobic digestion- the process of using a waste product such as beet, silage and other green waste into usable energy.

Several other EU countries already use the process to convert organic waste into fuels for transport and other uses.

The Tuam Bio-gas group, which is against the facility, is organising a public meeting in Tuam on the 27th of July.
