COROFIN were made to wait almost a full calendar year to get their SFC record back into the winning column, and that is what they achieved at Barna’s expense.

With the Caherlistrane vs Salthill-Knocknacarra tie cancelled, this fixture represented the sole workout for the Tuam Stadium pitch and attending stewards last Saturday evening for a 5.45pm throw-in time, as Ireland were playing host to Azerbaijan in Dublin.

In another soccer reference, Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ had a 49-game unbeaten streak ended in dramatic fashion by Manchester United in October 2004. Mountbellew-Moylough were the Manchester United to Corofin’s Arsenal on the final Sunday of September 2020, ending Corofin’s seven-year domination of Galway club football, inflicting a first loss in, you guessed, 49 SFC games.

Corofin were playing their first campaign without Kieran Fitzgerald in defence this Millennium in the 2020 Championship. Val Daly and his Mountbellew-Moylough charges placed a target firmly on their full-back line, Patrick Kelly and Eoin Finnerty reaping ultimate success from the venture.

This was surely in manager Kevin O’Brien’s mind ahead of last weekend. Lining out in the number 11 shirt, O’Brien decided to have Michael Farragher retreat to his own square from the off in Tuam.

Kevin Walsh experimented with playing Farragher at centre-back during the 2017 inter-county season, and it is clear from watching him throughout the decade, that Farragher has the footballing brain to be effective in many positions. Whether he stays back as the championship progresses, is another matter of course.
