The last 24 hours have seen a surge in the number of people on trolleys awaiting admission to hospitals around the country, including University Hospital Galway

According to a daily index that’s compiled by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, 340 people are on trolleys today, that’s up from 274 yesterday

Some of the hospitals where the biggest increase has been recorded include Cork University hospital, University Hospital Galway and Mayo General

There are 21 people awaiting admission on trolleys at UHG, up from 13 yesterday

However, this is still far less than the highs of 50 plus which have been experienced

The INMO says the increase is partly down to a jump in the number of people presenting with symptoms of the winter vomiting bug
