Three Galway gymnasts have been selected as Ireland’s representatives at an international competition being held in Slovenia this weekend, which is featuring competitors from 32 countries from around the world.

Bláthnaid Higgins, Kate Molloy, and Emma Slevin make up the Team Ireland entry for the FIG World Cup challenge, the first international gymnastics meet of the 2024 Olympic cycle and an event being used by many as preparation for the World Championships, which take place in Japan next month.

The trio, who are all members of Renmore Gymnastics Club, are joined in the Irish team by coaches Sally Batley, a coach at Renmore GC; and Sandra Stevenson, who is the High Performance Gymnastics Coach at the Glasgow School of Sport.

The three competitors will be joined in the women’s section by Ana Derek of Croatia, and Barbora Mokosova of Slovakia, who both competed in the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo. They are two of the six Olympians who will be competing in Slovenia, with Matvei Petrov of Albania, Giarnni Regini-Moran of GB, Sofus Heggemsnes of Norway, and Illia Kovtun of Ukraine all competing in the men’s section.

In all, there are 152 gymnasts competing across the two sections – 105 in the male section and 47 in the female section – with qualifying rounds held yesterday (Thursday) and today; and competition finals being held tomorrow and Sunday.
