Following a comprehensive survey of 95 local bars, the Galway City Tribune today names the cheapest pub – and the dearest – in town.

The survey found the cheapest ‘pint of plain’ is on sale for €3.50, while drinkers can save almost €14 on a round if they choose to frequent the right premises.

In this week’s paper, we publish league tables for the 95 pubs and hotel bars visited by this newspaper last weekend – and show how your local watering hole compares to the rest.

We found significant differences in the price of a glass of wine – up to €4.50 – as well as for Guinness (up to €1.50); Heineken (€1.10) and on pint bottles of Bulmers (up to €1.30).

And soft drinks didn’t escape the huge price discrepancies, with up to €1.70 on a Ballygowan, €1 on a 200ml ‘pub size’ bottle of Coke and €2.80 on a can of Red Bull.

Wine tipplers would also be advised to shop around – the survey found the cheapest glass of house wine available for €3.50, while the dearest was more than twice the price at a whopping €8. There were also significant differences in the price of quarter bottles (187.5ml) of wine.

The survey found that drinkers are paying an average of €4.20 for a pint of Guinness, €4.80 for a pint of Heineken, €5.35 for a pint bottle of Bulmers and €6.45 for a vodka & tonic.

But we found significant variations in prices – Guinness from €3.50 up to €5; Heineken ranging from €4.30 to €5.40; Bulmers from €4.80 to 6.10 and a vodka and tonic from €5.30 to €7.80.
