Tribune launches new daily news service on WhatsApp

This week, the Connacht Tribune Group launches an innovative new digital news service which brings daily bulletins direct to your smartphone.

The free service – using the WhatsApp instant messaging app – is believed to be the first of its kind for an Irish newspaper. Once subscribed, users will receive a morning news bulletin, as well as any breaking news alerts from the Connacht Tribune and Galway City Tribune.

It’s the latest step in the roll-out of our digital strategy, which has already seen the re-launch of ctrib2019.wpengine.com and the introduction of email newsletters, digital edition apps and the firm positioning of our Twitter and Facebook feeds as the ‘go to’ social media pages for verified news and sports from Galway.

Connacht Tribune Group Assistant Editor, Enda Cunningham said: “WhatsApp currently has 700 million users worldwide, and is one of the fastest growing platforms on social media.

“The service is designed to complement our existing digital offering. The beauty of it is that it serves all smartphones and tablets, and we can keep you up-to-date – direct to your pocket – even if you’re on the move.

“We keep messages to a minimum, so each morning, subscribers will receive a daily news bulletin, and we will only issue alerts on major breaking news.”

Tribune Group Chief Executive Dave Hickey said the addition of WhatsApp “is a further expansion of the digital services we offer to readers at home and abroad”.

“We recognise that readers want to get news alerts as soon as possible and follow up with a longer read when they have time.

“Our email newsletters and now WhatsApp provide this, backed up by our website and digital editions where you can browse the entire newspaper from the palm of your hand.”
