The Galway senior ladies claimed top spot in Division 1 after they convincingly defeated Tipperary in Tuam Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Although they are level on points with Cork, the Tribeswomen sit atop of Division 1 because they have a superior scoring difference.

Heading into the weekend, Cork were three points clear at the top of the table, but went down to a surprise four-point defeat away to Donegal, paving the way for Galway to take top spot with two games remaining.

As news filtered through to Tuam Stadium that Cork had lost, it became clear that a win would put Galway in a great position heading into the final two rounds. Their remaining games are home ties against Cork and Mayo respectively in the coming weeks.

Galway were struck a blow as Olivia Divilly before the game as she hurt her shoulder in training on Friday night. Despite this, Galway raced out in front as Fabienne Cooney, Ailbhe Davoren and Andrea Trill all got on the scoresheet to put Galway 0-3 to 0-0 up after 10 minutes. Davoren’s was the pick of the bunch as she drove through Tipperary’s defence to fire the ball over the crossbar.

Midfielder Caitlin Kennedy broke through the centre and fired over to reply for Shayne Ronayne’s team, but Róisín Leonard pointed a free and Lynsey Noone curled over a score to further extend the Galway lead.
