Tribesmen awarded 3-0 win after Cabinteely call-off game due to Covid-19

Galway United have recorded a first win of the season – and they did so without having to kick a ball, either in anger or pleasure.

John Caulfield’s side were due to take on Cabinteely in the league last Friday in Dublin, but the game was called off by the home side just over two hours before kick-off due to a case of Covid-19 in their camp.

The FAI’s Disciplinary Control Unit met on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the matter, and it implemented the ruling which all clubs had agreed to before the start of the season that no games would be postponed due to Covid-19, and if a game was postponed, the club which was forced to call off the game would concede the fixture on a 3-0 scoreline.

The travelling United party had already made its way to Dublin – in two buses in order to comply with social distancing – for last Friday’s game, and was about to leave the Leopardstown hotel where the players had their pre-match meal when word came through that the game was off.

“Following discussions with the HSE around a positive Covid-19 case at the club, Cabinteely FC have informed the League of Ireland that they are unable to field a team for the scheduled SSE Airtricity First Division fixture against Galway United,” read a statement issued by the FAI at 5.41pm last Friday.

“The fixture will not take place tonight and this matter will now be referred to the FAI’s Disciplinary Control Unit,” the statement finished.

That was then followed at 6.58pm by a statement from Cabinteely FC, saying the club regretted the decision to cancel the game, a decision that “followed protracted discussions with the HSE and the FAI”.

“Based on guidance from the HSE and information available, and in the interest of public health and safety, Cabinteely FC made a decision that the fixture should not take place.

“Cabinteely FC can confirm that the correct protocols and procedures have been followed throughout.
