Trial opens for theft from Co.Council compound in Connemara
Galway Bay fm newsroom – A 75-year-old Ros a Mhil man has gone on trial today along with a man from Westport charged with the theft and damage of steel girders from a Co.
Bertie Hernon, and 42-year-old Kieran Loftus, from Kilmeena, Westport are appearing before Galway Circuit Criminal Court.
Bertie Hernon and Kieran Loftus both pleaded not guilty to stealing the girders which were worth between €2,000 and €3,000 from the Co. Council compound at Kilmilkin, Breenane, Maam on July 29, 2011.
Both accused also denied three other charges of damaging the steel girders and of trespassing at the compound while in possession of cutting equipment, including a gas torch, and oxygen and propane gas cylinders, with the intention of using them to commit theft.
A jury of seven women and five men was empanelled this morning to hear evidence in the trial which is expected to last three days.
