Trial of Craughwell man over health and safety begins
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The director of a steel company has gone on trial charged with breaches of Health and Safety legislation in the city.
It followed the death of one of his employees while adjusting a steel structure at the Connacht Rugby Sportsground on College Road five years ago.
40 year old Colin Murphy of Hazel Lodge, Killeeneen, Craughwell, who is a director of CDM Steel Ltd., which has offices at Deerpark Industrial Estate, Oranmore, appeared before Galway Circuit Criminal Court.
He pleaded not guilty to five breaches of the legislation, in that as director/manager of the company he failed or neglected to implement safety measures to ensure the health and safety of his employee, foreman, Declan Byrne, at his place of work at Connacht Rugby Sportsgrounds, College Road, Galway, on April 30, 2008 and as a result of which, Mr Byrne sustained fatal injuries and died.
A jury of seven men and five women has been empanelled to hear evidence in the trial which is expected to last three days.
