AFTER shipping a haul of 1-4 without reply in the final five minutes of their loss to Mayo at MacHale Park the weekend previous, Galway ladies footballers were itching to set the record straight, and that was certainly apparent after just three minutes of action against Westmeath on Sunday.

Pearse Stadium can often be a mixed-bag weather-wise as the strong wind from the Atlantic can hamper some matches that have been played there over the years, but on Sunday, it was a beautiful sunny day that was perfect for a game of football. These condition suited Galway as there was a ferocious intensity to their forward play.

Claregalway’s Andrea Trill has long been an up and coming star given her exploits with various Galway underage teams, and against Westmeath, she truly announced herself to the country. She netted four goals in a scintillating attacking performance, which included two goals in the opening three minutes that effectively ended the tie as a contest.

Trill’s pace and finishing was just awesome, and it was on full show for all four of her goals as she tormented the Westmeath rearguard with her direct running.

With Trill spearheading it, Galway’s forward unit looked like a well-oiled machine as Kate Slevin, Megan Glynn, Mairéad Seoighe, Emma Reaney and Nicola Ward were in great form. Slevin, in particular, was tremendous, despite seeing her first half penalty saved by Laura McCormack, as she had all her fingerprints on Galway’s performance.
