Travelling piano to drum up support for Galway 2020

‘Give us a tune’ is the request of the Galway 2020 Travelling Piano as it takes to the streets of the city and the highways and byways of the county.

Until the end of the summer, the piano will travel throughout the city and county endeavouring to connect people through music and furthering Galway’s bid for the 2020 European Capital of Culture title.

The wandering piano has come into being through the talented and dedicated Galway2020 volunteer artists and mechanics that have taken the lead on this new initiative, the latest of many projects of the Galway 2020 campaign.

Music has always bonded the city of Galway, and now people are invited to play their own tune on the Galway2020 Travelling Piano in celebration of the city’s strong, traditional music heritage in non-traditional locations across the county.

Led by a talented and enthusiastic team of volunteers, the Travelling Piano has been lovingly adorned in the Galway 2020 colours and stands on a travelling stage – on wheels – allowing it to be whisked around the streets.

Passersby, shoppers and anyone who takes a fancy are invited to sit down and bash out a tune for the entertainment of the people of Galway.

Between now and the end of August it will appear in random locations, filling the streets with music played by the people it meets along the way.

To discover where the Travelling Piano will be situated next, visit the Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture Facebook and Twitter pages, where the locations will be revealed. The approach that is driving Galway’s bid for 2020 is one that is inclusive and participatory; hundreds of people have signed up to get involved in the Galway 2020 team, attended speak outs and meetings across the county and lent their ideas and suggestions to the social media pages.

The European Capital of Culture initiative is one of the most prestigious European cultural events, and is designated by the European Union for a period of one year during which the winning region organises a programme of cultural events with strong European connections.

The spotlight is now on Ireland, having been chosen as a host country for 2020.  Galway will compete for the title against Dublin, Limerick and a South East bid from Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny.
