Travel restrictions will still rule out many golfers from teeing it up

The initial elation around the news that the easing of Government restrictions on movement on Monday week, May 18, will mean golf courses will be permitted to open for play has been tempered somewhat with the realisation that the majority of golfers will still be unable to get back into the swing of things.

This is due to the fact that the majority of members of golf clubs in Galway reside beyond the 5k limit that must be adhered that comes in to force in the first phase of the relaxation of Covid-19-related restrictions in 10 days’ time.

Thousands of members of golf clubs across Galway are gagging to dust down their equipment and get back out in the fresh air – but many will be left bunkered as only those living closer to their respective courses avail of the facilities.

Some will be impacted more than others – like the famed Connemara Golf Links in Ballyconneely, where a large slice of its core membership in Clifden is some 15k away from the club itself.
