Transport top priority in new Development Plan

TRANSPORTATION is by far the most pressing issue for the public according to submissions received on the review of the city development plan.

One fifth of the issues raised in written submissions sent to City Hall concerned transport. This was a much larger percentage than in the last review carried out on the previous plan in 2003, when the public sent equal number of submissions about transport as they did about recreation and amenity.

The current city development plan, 2005-2011, must be reviewed under local government legislation four years into its life and two years before the new one is drawn up, which will act as a blueprint for all aspects of planning, infrastructure and social policy until 2017.

Tom Connell, Director of Services for Planning, Economic Development, Community and Enterprise, said public concern about transport were being heeded by the council and had led to the establishment of the Galway Transportation Unit, which would be responsible for a strategic and integrated approach to transport.
