The first step has been taken towards eliminating one of the worst traffic bottlenecks between Galway and Ennis.

The Transport Minister Noel Dempsey has turned the sod to formally begin the construction of the new N18 Gort to Crusheen Dual Carriageway.

It will be 23 kilometres long, bypass Gort and Crusheen and when it’s completed in 2011, will have cost over 207 million euro to build.

Work will begin at the Northern-end of the Ennis Bypass and will extend as far as 1 kilometre north of Gort.

Speaking to Galway Bay FM News at the sod turning ceremony this morning, Minister Dempsey says that this project shows the Governments commitment to western development.
