Traffic ‘plague’ is top priority for new Mayor

THE new Mayor of Galway says the city must strive to overcome the difficulties faced by the recession by working together to provide a ‘world class’ infrastructure.

City Councillor Declan McDonnell, who assumed the mayoralty this week, said the redevelopment of Galway Harbour was an “absolute necessity” for the growth and success of Galway.

Cllr McDonnell said the city is plagued with traffic congestion problems and pledged that a traffic-management plan and the complete development of the Galway City Outer Bypass is among his top priorities as is the development of Ceannt Station.

He also placed the provision of more social housing to tackle the long waiting lists high on his agenda for the coming year, along with finding a solution to the water contamination situation in Mervue.
