Galway city’s roads have become more congested in the past decade, according to official local authority traffic counts – peak morning traffic has increased on nine roads into the city.

The average daily volume of traffic on the city’s road network is more than 120,000, Galway City Council data confirms.

Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) counts for ten arteries into the city reveal that traffic volumes have spiked by over 6% in the decade to the end of 2018.

The AADT, which is collated by the City Council using traffic counters on the roads, was released to RTÉ Radió na Gaeltachta following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

In 2018, the AADT on ten city roads was 120,055, which was a jump of 6,824 compared with 2011.

All bar one road experienced an increase in traffic levels in 2018 compared with 2017.

Traffic volume on the R336 Barna Road grew by 10.48%, to 14,654 daily trips.
