Toy Show helped a return of bidders

THE Late Late Toy Show at the end of November could have played a key role in ensuring that buyers were allowed back in at ringside for marts in the New Year

The intense online activity – surrounding probably the biggest TV event of the year in Ireland – meant that the marts’ remote bidding system collapsed in many instances.

Loughrea Mart Manager, Jimmy Cooney, told the Farming Tribune, that the big freeze-up in online bidding they experienced at their Saturday sale of November 28 last, had been attributed to the Toy Show of the previous night.

“When we enquired with Vodafone about what had happened with the online system, we were told it was due to the volume of online traffic from the Late Late Toy Show.

“The simple fact of the matter is that we don’t have the infrastructure in place here in Ireland to do all our business online – as far as the marts are concerned, we badly need the activity at ringside as well.

“There are many buyers out there who won’t purchase stock without seeing them in the ring – so we are delighted that buyers will be allowed in at ringside when the marts reopen in the New Year,” said Jimmy Cooney.

He added that in the context of the forthcoming sales in early 2021, there was a reasonable degree of optimism in place that the positive trends in the latter part of 2020 would be maintained.
